Anglofuturism for Beginners

Tom Ough, co-host of the Anglofuturism podcast takes us on a trip through the Brave New World of cricket and spaceships

If you’ve spent any time in the stranger, more imaginative corners of the Very Online Right (VOR), you’ll have seen a new word everywhere: Anglofuturism. Alongside it come the unmistakable memes, Victorian redcoats staffing orbital spaceports, RoboCop bobbies patrolling maglev trains steaming through the shires, and red telephone boxes rebuilt for a the new glorious digital age.

But what is Anglofuturism? A serious political project? A meme? A vibe? Is it tied to the emerging thinkers of the right, or could there be a left-wing Anglofuturism too?

To explore all this and much more, Alex sat down with Tom Ough, senior editor at UnHerd and co-host of the Anglofuturism podcast. Together they trace the movement’s origins, its real world and fictional inspirations, and ask whether this online aesthetic has anything meaningful to offer Britain’s political future. They wrap up with some examples of applied Anglofuturism and a brand-new game: Is It Anglofuturist?
